What Is Worship?
It’s easy to mistake worship as merely singing of songs, jumping around, clapping and bowing down of knees; I too, once had this misconception. You’ve heard it being mentioned that worship is more than just singing of songs; perhaps this puzzles you – like it did to me. So what is worship exactly?
In 2007, after a week-long study on this topic, God granted me understanding: “Worship is the response to the worth of God.” The worth of God is the revelation of God; through His Word, the Holy Spirit and Jesus.
. revelation
God's revealing/disclosure of Himself (His attributes) and His will to His creatures.
In Romans, the apostle Paul gave a clear explanation of what worship is:
"Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your reasonable act of worship."
- Romans 12:1 (NIV)
Worship is the response to the worth of God.
response: offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God
worth of God: God's mercy
In another translation it reads:
“So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him.”
- Romans 12:1 (The Message)
Worship is the response to the worth of God. Worship encompasses the entirety of our lives; every hour, every minute, every second. Singing, jumping, dancing and clapping are ways with which we worship (respond to) God.
Reasons For Worship
It’s not about you; worship (singing to God) is primarily about God and for God. Here are two Biblical reasons for worship – both God-focused.
* God Deserves Our Worship
After years of prophecies, Jesus Christ came into this world. Leading a sinless life in a fallen world, He qualifies to be the one perfect sacrifice, that releases the forgiveness of God (the Father) upon all of sinful mankind.
“God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”
- 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV)
Christ did not simply die, He did a glorious work that no one else could have done; an achievement that will never be repeated or matched. He did it for you and for me, that we may enter into the presence of a Holy God without sin being in the way. He did it that we may experience the truest meaning of life – a relationship with God.
Deep down inside, we yearn to love with someone who is perfect, satisfies our deepest needs, always there for us, someone who’ll never fail or disappoint us. God fulfills all these; God is love.
Who God is and what He has done deserves our worship, and so we worship in His presence. We acknowledge, with reverence and awe, His superiority to us in every way. (Read Psalm 98)
. reverence
A feeling or attitude of deep respect.
. awe
An overwhelming feeling of admiration and/or produced by that which is grand and extremely powerful.
* God Requires Our Worship
Jesus commanded, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.” (Matthew 4:10) That’s not all. Paul said that we are a royal priesthood, a group of people specially chosen to sing the praises of God. (1 Peter 2:9) We’re not called to worship, we are chosen!
It’s a great privilege to be chosen by God, and along with this comes a great responsibility. I’d believe that most of the time, we enjoy singing and celebrating before God. However, sometimes – if we’re honest – we don’t exactly feel like it. During times like this, let us be reminded that we have the responsibility to adore our God irrespective of how we feel.
It’s not about us, it’s about God.
