Yay more Brooke Fraser

Inspired by a song I heard on Brandon's blog. Well I seached for more Brooke Fraser songs. I posted a number of her songs already and so anyone who follows my blog should know the five that I listen to. Shadowfeet, Deciphering me, Albetine, Lifeline and C S Lewis Song.

I never really listened to the rest of her songs because although some of them were not bad, they werent like super nice or anything haha. These five were the more upbeat ones in that sense I guess, I hardly listen to any songs that are quieter throughout. Guess im quite a poppy person =p. Well with the recent thing about pop music culture and people telling me to go find other good songs instead of the 'thrash' that is in the popular music scene, where a better place to start? =)

Brooke Fraser songs are amazing. The lyrics she writes really captures some things in life beautifully. Just read some of the comments of the songs haha.

"How did this woman make it through all the downward modern influences to produce a message like this through a secular commercial source? It's fantastic!"

"She is an amazing singer and an even better song writer. I think of her as a poet. She has an incredible way with words."

That is my sentiment really. Enjoy =).

The song on Brandon's blog. Beautifully written, love the blend of voices that really further brings out the idea of being 'tethered'.

So we're back here again
Tip toeing round the edge of the end
Wondering who will be last to admit
That we're finally over

Turned twenty one on the day that we met
Terrible shoes and plausible dress
It's funny how sad the funny things get as you grow older

Better or worse
But what else can we do?
And better or worse
I am tethered to you
If it's not either of us
Tell me who are we fooling?

I love the art of biting my tongue
I'm tired of trying to guess what was wrong
Both agreed on where we should go
But not how to get there

We tried and tried to loosen the knots
Thinking once we're untangled we'll be better off
But it's these failures and faults that hold us together

Better or worse
But what else can we do?
And better or worse
I am tethered to you
If it's not either of us
Tell me who are we fooling?

This beautiful tangle that's bruising us blue
It's a beautiful knot that we just can't undo
Together we're one but apart tell me
Who are we fooling?

Cause real love
Is hard love
It's all we have
It's a break-neck
Train wreck
It's all we have

So we're back here again
Turning away from the edge of the end
Arm in arm

Better or worse
But what else can we do?
And better or worse
I am tethered to you
If it's not either of us
Tell me who are we fooling?

This beautiful tangle that's bruising us blue
It's a beautiful knot we just can't undo
If it's not either of us, tell me who are we fooling?

Together we're one, but apart tell me
Who are we fooling?

A love song very different from the things we keep hearing in the world. As someone commented on the lyric page I was at, most love songs in the pop culture really do not capture the true essence of what it means. Many songs about love arent really about just the feelings, of course we cant remove that, but Brooke Fraser captures something different here.

In the autumn on the ground, between the traffic and the traffic and the ordinary sounds
I am thinking signs and seasons while a north wind blows through
i watch as lovers pass me by
Walking stories - whos and hows and whys
Musing lazily on love
Pondering you
I'll give it time, give it space and be still for a spell
When it's time to walk that way we wana walk it well

I'll be waiting for you baby
I'll be holding back the darkest night
Love is waiting til we're ready, til it's right
Love is waiting

It's my caution not the cold
there's no other hand that i would rather hold
the climate changes, im singing for the strangers about you
dont keep time, slow the pace
Honey hold on if you can
the bets are getting surer now that you're my man

I could write a million songs about the way you say my name
I could live a lifetime with you and then do it all again
and like I can't force the sun to rise or hasten summer's start,
neither should I rush my way into your heart

Like many of her songs, they arent specifically Christian but they certainly carry the undertones of it with it being such huge influence in her life. I heard this song a couple of times before but this is the first time I looked at the lyrics. The link drawn to arithmetic is brilliant.

I've been staring at the sky tonight
Marvelling and passing time
Wondering what to do with daylight
Until I can make you mine
You are the one I want, you are the one I want

I've been thinking of changing my mind
(It never stays the same for long)
But of all the things I know for sure
You're the only certain one
You are the one I want, you are the one I want

I've been counting up all my wrongs
One sorry for each star
See I'd apologise my way to you
If the heavens stretched that far
You are the one I want, you are the one I want

I won't find what I am looking for
If I only "see" by keeping score
'Cos I know now you are so much more than arithmetic

'Cos if I add, if I subtract
If I give it all, try to take some back
I've forgotten the freedom that comes from the fact
That you are the sum
So you are the one
I want

When the years are showing on my face
And my strongest days are gone
When my heart and flesh depart this place
From a life that sung your song

You'll still be the one I want
You'll still be the one I want
You'll still be the one I want
You'll still be the one I want

Frankly I dont know what this song means. I searched for the meaning and I get a whole lot of different interpretations about it too. Any ideas? Its a pretty sad song even when I dont know exactly what i means heh =p.

Middle of nowhere
Finally you can breathe
Nobody knows your name
It's easier
Shut you eyes tightly
Clench your fists till they almost bleed
Cautiously, lightly
Gently expose what's underneath

And all you feel now
Is the scarlet in the day
And even if it's real, you can't stay
So there you go
You're gone for good
There you go
You're gone for good

Your mind is swollen
From months of thought without release
It's taken it's toll on you
And this very moment
Of timid and fragile honesty
Is precious and rare
And fleeting

And all you feel now
Is the scarlet in the day
And even if it's real, you can't stay
So there you go
You're gone for good
There you go
You're gone for good
Oh, oh

There you go
You're gone for good
There you go
You're gone for good
