The best explainer I have seen on this topic. Geopolitics is complicated. The narratives we hear are simplified. I think instead of reducing it to 'Putin is crazy', it helps to understand how the actions taken are ultimately in his self-interest.
It's similar to north korea and how they wave their nukes. It seems dangerous and insane, but the aggressive posturing clearly works.
