Not an American but...

This is truly refreshing. I really hope the democrats win this upcoming election.

It's not about the policies, tbh I don't really know them well. It's just that for the past 8 years, US politics has been a joke. You can't take the US seriously, extreme ideology and ugly fighting within the country, no consensus just shouting over one another. You just can't trust the most important country in the global economy. And the thought of a second Trump presidency and its implications to the world is horrifying.

The election was going to be senile old man vs criminal, and the outcome of that had serious global repercussions. The fumbles, followed by the attempted assassination. I must say it was a real low point, we all had to prepare to accept a Trump presidency for another 4 years.

Ironically, perhaps the dire straits that the democrats found themselves in, the sheer likelihood of a Trump victory after his iconic photo and the future that was at stake, was exactly what was needed. Biden stepped aside, the democrats rallied around Harris so rapidly and the campaign lifted off.

For me, there was relief that not all hope was lost. That said, the country is still divisive, and Trump could still win.

It is in this context that this speech, the first speech by Harris' VP pick Tim Walz is so impactful.

Because it's not about democrats and good and republicans are evil, it's about joy and unity and a brighter future ahead. We're so used to US lunacy that normal feels great. The democrats paused, asked themselves when was the last time they did really well, and took a leaf out of the Obama playbook.

So I hope democrats win and I hope they win big. The democrats in their desperation seem to have realised that infighting and mudslinging republicans is not the path to victory. Victory comes from painting a future of hope that people can believe in.

And if they win, then the message will be clear to republicans as well, that Trump-like figures will not be able to win elections. And from there I hope they too wake up their idea.

We'll have a more normal America, where democrats and republicans can actually respect each other, talk to each other, and win elections through sound policies rather than fearmongering. And hopefully the rest of the world follows suit.

That's what I want really, whether democrat or republican we want decent people. We don't need people like Trump. We need people like Walz.

I remember the days we looked at Obama and thought, hey that's the most powerful man in the world, and he is a great, respectable leader. I hope we can get those days back.
